After more then seven years on the run police in Rome finally caught up to and arrested Camorra mafia boss Nicola Panaro. Panaro is head of one of the most powerful clans of the Naples based Camorra mafia. The 41 year old mafia boss had evaded the police for years and was considered one of Italy’s 30 most dangerous fugitives.

Panaro was the boss of the Casalesi Clan of the Camorra mafia. In a statement made by Roberto Maroni the Interior Minister he said the arrest was another extraordinary success of the fight against the Naples based Camorra mafia. Just a month ago 12 members of the Casalesi clan were arrested which included the brother and father of long time boss Michele Zagaria. Zagaria has been on the run from law enforcement now for over 15 years.

Last week in what Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi called the biggest operation against the Camorra mafia of its kind over $700 Million euros ($1.3 billion) in land and buildings from Camorra mafia members. The attack on the Camorra mafia which is one of Italy’s four major organized crime syndicates have seen some very effective results of late. The Camorra is sure to do as it has done and simply adapt and rebuild but the efforts could be putting more pressure on the organization then they have seen in years past.
